We had a great conversation about Reading this week, great ideas on how to get FAMILIES reading and the benefits of reading.
@Jay_Eitner – I have teamed up with local libraries in the past as well as academic companies we have used to not only have books donated, but have assisted me in making ‘theme nights’ where food and merriment would be had by all. That & free food. Very nice turnout.
@WinklerD – Reading can open doors to conversations at home. Whether they read a book together, or just ask questions about what each other is reading.
@Howells_Owls – Reading is important for kids & families of ALL ages because it not only builds literacy foundations but also creates meaningful emotional connections. Also builds schema and develops imagination – important basis for writing!
@juliepile – Benefits of reading: mental stimulation, stress reduction, knowledge, vocabulary expansion, memory improvement, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus & concentration, better writing skills, tranquility
@MandyMunich – I’ve helped put @LtlFreeLibrary boxes in our community, easy access to books for all ages! Also fun family literacy nights, incentives, challenges, book studies…
@alma_henry – •We started reading bedtime stories every Wednesday & broadcasting. Once a month, we feature a 6th grade Ambassador. •Start a Principal’s Book Club for older grades. •Have staff’s snap pic taken with fav book. Post by door.

On September 11th , we will be have a special guest with us – Brigette Blom Ramsey (@Bblomramsey) from the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence (@prichardcom). The topic is The Groundswell Initiative – How Kentucky is building community capacity to support schools.
When families are engaged, children do better in school. The same holds true for communities. When communities are engaged and hold high expectations for all of their schools, children and schools do better. Thus, as another school year begins, our shared goal must be to build the capacity for effective partnerships that lead to greater student success.
Our communities are critical in facilitating the success of both our schools and our students. Our communities have the power to signal the value of education, to hold high expectations for the education of all, and to provide the supports necessary to realize success. Developing the capacity of Kentucky’s communities to fill this crucial role is what I call the Groundswell Initiative. #GroundswellKY
